UGC asks universities to conduct mass yoga demonstrations on International Yoga Day

On the 5th edition of International Yoga Day, the theme is decided as ‘climate action’ by the UN.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has written a letter to vice-chancellors of all the universities and higher education institutions in India to observe ‘International Yoga Day’ on June 21,2019. The letter sent by the UGC to different varsities asked the university ‘to promote yoga among the youth and to involve the sentiment of national pride proliferating yoga to the rest of the world’.

The letter has asked the following points:

  • It has asked the institutes to open essential facilities to allow students and teachers to practice yoga for the event during the summer vacations.
  • It has asked the varsities to hold events including a demonstration on basic yoga drills on the day.
  • It has asked all the varsities to upload the details of the events carried out by them on the day at the UGC website –

A copy of common Yoga Protocol which also includes a 45-minute sequence of Yoga drill is uploaded on the official website of AYUSH ministry i.e. for institutes to refer to.

5th edition International Yoga Day

2019 will mark the fifth edition of International Yoga Day. It’s inception was done by Prime Minster Narendra Modi in the year 2015 to promote the culture of yoga in the world and to re-establish the culture of yoga among the Indian youth. The theme for this year’s International Yoga Day is ‘climate action‘.

This year the newly established AYUSH Ministry is responsible for organizing the event. It has directed the universities and colleges across India to hold a mass demonstration on the day from 7 am to 8 am wherein Teachers, students and other stakeholders will be participating.
